Madison Historical Society Project Update
posted 12:22:00 PM | archive
This is a follow-up to our discussion last evening regarding the project to confirm our conclusions and provide documentation that was previously sent to everyone as a reminder. Dr. Edwards clearly laid out the timeline and roles of interns as well as those of my students. Careful digestion of the information she had provided weeks ago will enable everyone to stay on target. This timeline must be respected and students are expected to complete transcripts as explained by Justin Starnes last evening.
My expectations from my students are clearly laid out in the syllabus. This interview will count as one of the three required for the final seminar paper, and the information gathered must be applied in manner necessary to respond to the priorities of the seminar. A simple reproduction of the MHS interview transcript is not appropriate and will not be accepted. On March 23rd, seminar students will have completed their involvement with the MHS project. It is expected that only quality work will be produced and submitted.
As ambassadors for Drew University, you are assuming an important role on behalf of our institution and we [Dr. Edwards, Dr. Greenwald, Mrs. Peek/MHS and myself] are here to provide you whatever timely support that you need. It is expected that everything will be completed and submitted to Mrs. Peek by the end of next week, according to the timeline presented by Dr. Edwards.
This is an exciting opportunity for cooperation between the University and Madison. I have no doubt that my students will make us proud! As always, I remain available for questions.
Updated MHS Project Information is on Bulletin boardDr. Murphy.

Remarks on Participation and Advice from Seminar Advisor George Martin
posted 9:41:52 AM | archive
Students,
The level of participation observed at the session with Mr. Guthrie did not reflect the level of capacity of students in this seminar. Some of you made good efforts, such as Jason, but on the whole there was little indication that questions were prepared ahead of time to assist you in easing into the discussion or that your level of interest in the presentation of our outstanding guest speaker outweighed your discomfort in speaking up. Please do not forget to post your speaker questions on the Bulletin Board prior to the session and to give me [or Ms. Laryea] a hard copy before each seminar session begins.
During the course of the speaker's presentation, you may wish to modify your questions based on the information presented. Show your interest by actively engaging in discussion and asking questions. Remember that the quality of your seminar participation is being assessed on an ongoing basis. If you have questions, please do not hesitate to contact me or post the questions here for the response to be available to everyone.
I have copied below excerpts from an e-mail that our seminar advisor, George Martin/Entrepreneur, sent to me following our session with Mr. Guthrie. His observations are important and useful. Please read them and apply what you learn through better formulating the questions raised during our guest speaker sessions. Please do not use the questions below verbatim. Personalize and adapt them to each occasion; use them as guidelines only.
Comments by Mr. George Martin:
" They all need to work on it a little more and understand how communications is key. In a networking venue they need to attempt to meet as many people as they can and introduce themselves. Also, have a prepared question for the event such as the following:
1. If you had to do your life all over again what would you change?
2. What made you choose this entrepreneurial path? (happenstance serendipity}
3. What is the impact on an entrepreneurial path to your family?
4. What was the biggest obstacle you had to overcome in your business career?
5. What was the biggest obstacle you had to overcome in your personal life?
6. Why do you believe you have been successful?
7. What characteristics are you looking for in a prospective employee or partner?
8. What are your greatest strengths?
9. What areas did you have to work on to improve yourself and your business?
10. What is your greatest challenge or opportunity?
11. Is an advanced degree necessary to be successful?
12. What do you see as the greatest obstacle facing an African American entrepreneur these days?
13. What was your major in undergraduate school or graduate school and how are you using it now?
14. What is your vision or mission for your business and your life? "

Career/Etiquette Dinner Location
posted 8:59:35 AM | archive
Please note that the event will be held first in Commons Room 209 beginning at 5 P.M. for hors d'oeuvres and drinks, with instruction on balancing everything at once while carrying on conversation. Dinner will take place about 15 to 20 minutes later in the University Club. Our class will be seated at the same table with a few other students. This will give you the opportunity to discuss seminar-related issues and networking during a dining experience. Please bring your business cards with you. This will be a great and enjoyable experience. Please note that the food will not be the usual cafeteria fare, but a cut above the habitual, giving you the opportunity to really enjoy learning in that setting! See you all there. Please call me ahead if there are questions.
